What is Monkeypox

What is monkey pox- it is an infectious disease that can occur in humans and some other animals ,
and it is caused by the monkeypox virus, a zoonotic virus in the genus Orthopoxvirus. The variola
virus , the causative agent of smallpox , is also in this genus.

What are the symptoms of Monkeypox?

People with monkeypox get a rash that may be located on or near the genitals (penis, testicles, labia, and vagina) or anus (butthole) and could be on other areas like the hands, feet, chest, face, or mouth.

The rash will go through several stages, including scabs, before healing.
The rash can initially look like pimples or blisters and may be painful or itchy.
Other symptoms of monkeypox can include:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Muscle aches and backache
  • Headache
  • Respiratory symptoms (e.g. sore throat, nasal congestion, or cough)
  • You may experience all or only a few symptoms

How long the MPV symtoms last –
Usually start 3 weeks of exposure to the virus, the rash develop 1-4 days later, the illness tipically last 2-4 weeks

How does Monkeypox Spread?

In the current outbreak, the monkeypox virus is spreading mainly during oral, anal and vaginal sex and other intimate contact, such as rimming, hugging, kissing, biting, cuddling and massage.

The virus can spread through:

Direct contact with a rash or sores of someone who has the virus
Contact with clothing, bedding and other items used by a person with monkeypox
Prolonged face-to-face contact
Experts are currently studying whether the virus can also spread through semen, saliva, feces and other body fluids.

People can spread the virus when they have symptoms. Experts are studying whether the virus can spread before symptoms start or after they end.

Close or Intimate Contact
  • Direct contact with monkeypox rash , scabs, or body fluids from a person with monkeypox
  • Touching objects , fabrics,(clothing,bedding,or towels), and surfaces that have been used
    by somebody with monkeypox
  • Contact with respiratory secretions

contacts can happened during intimate contact , including:

  • Oral, anal, and vaginal sex or touching the genitals (penis, testicles, lavia, and vagina) or anus(butthole) of a person with monkeypox
  • Hugging, massage, and kissing
  • Prolong face-to-face contact
  • Touching fabrics and objects during sex that were used by a person with monkey pox and that have not been disinfected , such as bedding, towels, fetish gear, and sex toys.
Monkeypox and Pregnancy

A pregnant person can spread the virus to their fetus through the placenta.

Infected animals

People can get infected animals , eigher by being scratched or bitten by the animal or by preparing or eating meat or using products from infected animals
